Jakarta, 20 October 2023 – The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) explained the hot weather with a maximum temperature of 37 degrees Celsius that occurred in almost all of Indonesia. The Head of Forecasters Working Group BMKG Miming Saepudin stated that between 1991 and 2021, the maximum temperature for big cities in Indonesia that are located at the south of the equator such as Jakarta, Semarang, and Surabaya, reached its peak in the September-October period.
“The maximum temperature at Greater Jakarta is recorded in South Tangerang with 37.5 degrees Celsius on September 29, 2023,” he said on Tuesday, October 17.
Generally, he said, the hot weather was triggered by several atmospheric dynamic conditions, such as sunny weather, the lack of cloud formation, and the low humidity level that dominates the majority of Indonesia including Greater Jakarta. The sun’s position is also one of the factors that cause this hot weather
In addition to the atmospheric dynamics conditions, other factors that affect the hot weather in Indonesia and Jakarta are wind velocity, clouds, and the air humidity level.
“The extreme hot weather phenomenon is forecasted to last throughout October,” he said.
According to Miming, the body will experience feel-like temperature or apparent temperature during hot weather. “This is a term to describe the temperature sensation felt by humans based on the combination of the air temperature, humidity level, and other factors such as wind velocity and the sun,” he said.
For November, BMKG forecasted that parts of Indonesia will enter its transitional season, with rain expected to pour over the regions and lower the air temperature.
BMKG hopes the public maintain their stamina and hydrate during this extremely hot season.
